Santa Fe to Taos

Published on 10 August 2024 at 16:00

Remember I said about the show Longmire? Well the office of Sheriff Walt Longmire is in the fictional town of Durant, Absaroka County. It is actually filmed in Las Vegas, New Mexico... and as that is an hour from Santa Fe, we pooped along for a photo and a coffee!

As with all US towns, it is bigger than most Uk towns, but Las Vegas centres around the town square - the Las Vegas Plaza. First recommendation of the day is watch Longmire, the visit the plaza, and in particular the door to the Sheriff's office, which still has the fictional town detail on the window. All in all, rather cool!

As we mooched around the plaza, we were approached by an older gent, who had clocked our accents in an art shop just previously. We spoke for about 15 minutes about his time travelling (he was a professor of Latin Studies at UCLA before retiring), his career, my military career, Lynn's nursing life etc. A really nice bloke and typical of the characters we have met on the trip so far.

Lunch in the Plaza Hotel which was nice!

After Las Vegas, we got "on the road again" and headed toward Taos, to be nothing more than a staging point for tomorrow's trip into Colorado.  However, the area surrounding Taos is spectacular, the pinnacle of which is the Rio Grande Bridge. The views are amazing, and the pictures do not convey how high it really is.

The bridge does have a dark side though - with a not very high barrier it is an obvious suicide hot spot - plenty of memorials mark a remembrance to a loved one.

Our hotel in Taos was a bit pants - a Super 8, and so I was not too enthused about the evening meal and the overnight! We decided to have a drive through the town and we came across a restaurant called Martyrs Steakhouse, and how pleased we were to discover it was incredible. Sat on the patio, steak and beer, or salmon and beer for Lynn, SpagBol for Ella! Terrific.

Restaurant 9/10

Hotel 4/10.
